Recommended books page with online ordering through Amazon and iBS

Welcome! This site aims to collect together resources for people interested in finding out more about eating disorders. When I started this page, there was very little of this sort of information available on the net. But in the last few years, with the massive increase in internet use, more and more sites are becoming available. This site aims to collect together resources which I consider to be high in quality, concentrating particularly on academic and professional resources, and on UK-based sites.

GENERAL INFORMATION

• To subscribe to an email mailing list (listserv) for eating disorder sufferers, send the message 'subscribe Eatdis-l' (letter l not number one) to listserv@ftp2.biztech.net

• For more discussion of eating related issues, try a usenet newsgroup

• SomethingFishy's site is full of excellent information. Particularly recommended are pages on information and support for family and friends of sufferers and physical problems caused by eating disorders. The site also features a chat room where you can talk with sufferers, carers and professionals.

• The Eating Disorder Referral and Information Center is dedicated to the prevention and treatment of eating disorders.Its executive director writes: "We provide information and treatment resources for all forms of eating disorders. We hope to promote social attitudes that enhance a healthy body image and self-esteem. We provide referrals to eating disorder professionals, treatment facilities and support groups, etc. In addition, we offer general information to inform the public about the treatment and prevention of eating disorders."

• Anorexia Nervosa: Judy's Story is an uplifting site written by Judy who has recovered from anorexia. Her book "The Long Road Back; A Survivor's Guide to Anorexia" is now available from Amazon in the US and the Amazon in the UK, and all good bookshops!

• NEWLY UPDATED: Psychotherapist Joanna Poppink has written many excellent articles about eating disorders, including "Eating Disorder Early Recovery: How Do I Begin? The 84,000 Ways", "Getting Through A Meal with Strength and Serenity" and "Triumphant Journey: A Cyberguide To Stop Overeating and Recover from Eating Disorders"

• Megan Bryan edits a monthly newsletter for families who have a loved one suffering from an eating disorder. You can see the first issue for free online, which includes a brilliant article by Christina describing her struggle with anorexia.

• You will have a warm (and musical) welcome at Jenni's site, based on her own experience with anorexia

• Eating Disorders Recovery Online is a website run by Jeannie Rust. It provides many resources to help those in recovery (including some pay-for services), as well as the Eating Disorders Recovery bulletin board

• The Concerned Counselling website has a section devoted to eating disorders as well as other psychological problems and addictions. Includes some pay-for services but online chat sessions are free

• Dr. Jane Rachel Kaplan is a psychotherapist specialising in eating disorders. Her site, Optimal Eating, describes itself as "an information, education and consultation service for concerns about food, eating, nutrition and body image". Her bookstore page currently features books for parents who are concerned about their children's eating. Check out Unbinding the Body Betrayed, a webring of sites related to eating disorders

• Cath's links to Eating Disorder resources is one of the longest running sites of this kind on the internet and contains many international links

• Anorexia: Information and guidance for patients, family and friends is a moving resource, written by Cheryl Wildes about her sister who has anorexia. Includes many offline resources, mainly US-based.

• Mirror-mirror is a Canadian website devoted to eating disorders

• Daniel Slosberg's site is concerned with eating disorders in men and has an excellent resources page with essential information for male sufferers or for anyone who wants to find out more about this under-researched area

• Gurze books publish over 100 books and tapes on Eating Disorders and you can order their free catalogue online

• Hunger Pains is an inspiring Canadian based site with resources on Anorexia, Bulimia, EDNOS (other eating disorders) and Obesity, and some great quotes

• The National Institute for Mental Health has some straightforward Eating Disorders Information

  JULY 2000: The British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies 28th Annual Conference, London, 19th-22nd July 2000

  Healthcare Events Ltd now has a website including listings of their current conferences

• Eating Disorders Online is the journal of the the e-journal of the Eating Disorders Internetwork Project, and is, as far as I know, the only online journal devoted exclusively to eating disorders

• Thomas J. Shiltz has made available the outline of his excellent workshop entitled Reaching Men with Messages of Prevention which includes an excellent list of contacts and relevant reading material

• The US-based Academy of Eating Disorders has a website with basic information about eating disorders, membership and the Academy's activities

• The Society for Adolescent Medicine has published a Position Paper on Eating Disorders in Adolescents

• The British Feeding and Drinking Group has a website devoted to research and clinical work related to eating disorders, nutrition, food choice, mood and behavioural effects of food and the psychopharmacology of ingestion.

• Kathryn Zerbe, of the Menninger Clinic has written this interesting article about psychosomatic aspects of eating disorders

• Check out more articles on anorexia, bulimia and obesity, written by Puerto Rican psychiatrist, Neftali Olmo at his Puerto Rico Medical Psychology site.

• The European Council on Eating Disorders has a homepage with information about events and membership

• Gurze books publish the Eating Disorders Review, a bimonthly newsletter for professionals (not to be confused with the European Eating Disorders Review, published by Wiley)

• Gurze also publish Eating Disorders: The Journal of Treatment & Prevention

• David Gleaves at Texas A&M University maintains a mailing list on eating disorders aimed at professionals. To subscribe, send the command 'subscribe eat-dis' to listserv@sjuvm.maelstrom.edu (N.B. This list is not a support group for sufferers; for that type of list, see information about eatdis-l in the general section above)

• The American Dietetic Association has a position statement on Eating Disorders (N.B. This page is rather large), and also lists DSM-IV criteria.

• The Internet Mental Health Website has information on Anorexia and Bulimia including articles on diagnosis and references for current research, plus ICD-10 criteria.

• The Mental Health InfoSource website has some research information.

• Anyone in the UK planning research into eating disorders should take a look at the websites for the MRC and the Wellcome Trust

• For general information about health research opportunities in the UK, check out the grants and funding site at Leeds University

• If you are a US based researcher, you'll want to look at the NIH website for information about funding

  • Huntercombe Manor Hospital in Berkshire offers treatment of eating disorders and other problems in adolescents and young adults
  • The Priory Hospital is a private hospital in South London, UK, offering treatment for eating disorders and other problems

• Laureate Psychiatric Hospital and Clinic in Tulsa, Oklahoma offers treatment for adults and adolescents with eating disorders
• The Remuda Ranch website has ED links and a newsletter as well as info about their treatment program for adult and adolescent women based in Arizona
• La Montagne is a residential treatment centre for adolescent and adult women with EDs based in Crystal City, Missouri
• LifeForce offers a 15 day integrated treatment programme for disordered eating at its centre in Tucson, Arizona
• Nada Mangialetti is a behavioural consultant who works with people with eating disorders based in Westchester County , NY. Her site contains lots of information about her services plus articles on managed care and choosing a therapist and useful links to related sites
• The Monte Nido Treatment Center is based in Malibu, California and specialises in treating eating disorders
• The Johns Hopkins Eating Disorders Unit in Baltimore now has a website describing their treatment program
• The Massachusetts Eating Disorder Association offers telephone and group counselling and also organises referrals
• The Centre for Study of Anorexia and Bulimia is based in New York and carries out training for professionals as well as offering treatment for eating disorder sufferers and support groups for families and sufferers
• The Centre for Eating Disorders at St Joseph is based in Maryland and offers treatment for anorexia, bulimia and binge-eating disorder
• The A.V. Therapy and Eating Disorders Centre is based in Lancaster, California
• Rogers Hospital in Wisconsin, USA has a treatment program for sufferers from eating disorders.
• The Renfrew Centre is for women only and has branches across the United States. It describes itself as: describes itself as "an innovative resource in education and treatment for:eating disorders, trauma, anxiety, depression and women's issues"

• The Something Fishy site is a good place to start for excellent information on physical problems which can result from eating disorders

• ANRED has a page explaining the problems of laxative and enema abuse

• I have written a page about Osteoporosis and Eating Disorders which gives information about the link between the two, as well as details of how osteoporosis can be diagnosed, prevented and treated

• The National Osteoporosis Foundation also have an excellent site with more general info about osteoporosis

• The National Osteoporosis Society in the UK have also set up a website.

OVEREATING/B.E.D/COMPULSIVE EATING

• The Bristol Hospital is a good place to start for an introduction to problems of overeating

• Geri's Recovery Music tells the story of Geri's recovery from compulsive eating and the music that has been a part of her healing
  

• Mental Health Infosource also has a straightforward factsheet about Binge Eating Disorder

• The Overcoming Overeating mailing list is for discussion of the Hirshmann/Munter approach to overcoming overeating. To subscribe, send the text 'subscribe' to oo-group-request@columbia.edu

• There is also a website dealing with the Hirchmann/ Munter approach to overcoming overeating

• The Overeaters Recovery Group Home Page has information on the 12 step Overeaters Anonymous program, and about several mailing lists for support

• A Skeptic's Guide to the Twelve Steps is a guide written by a psychotherapist who also tells his own story of recovery from compulsive overeating using the 12 step approach

NEWSGROUPS + FAQS

• alt.support.eating-disorders is a long running usenet newsgroup for anyone suffering from an eating disorder. Read this FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) for more information, or just go and lurk for a while

• alt.support.big-folks (group) aims to give support to "fat people and their friends" and also has a FAQ

• soc.support.fat-acceptance is a newsgroup based on acceptance of fatness - diet talk is discouraged. Check out their FAQ

RELATED ISSUES

This new section will provide link to sites which, while not directly concerned with eating disorders, cover related issues such as mental health in general, women's health and problems such as self-harm, depression and anxiety.

• Mental health in the UK is a new site for mental health service users, including a chat room and newsgroup

• Supportive Souls is a great site with info about anxiety, depression and other problems from a fellow sufferer

• Grant me the serenity... is intended to help those in or seeking recovery from various addictions including eating problems

• The Institute of Psychiatry where I work and study, has a website with comprehensive information about departments, courses etc.

• 1-800-Therapist is a mental health referral service for the USA and Canada which can put you in touch with an appropriate professional for all kinds of mental health problems. (Referrals are free but therapists pay to be listed)

• Supportive Souls Mental Health Guide is a friendly site listing general mental health resources

• The National Association for the Advancement of Fat Acceptance (NAAFA) has a website

• Hugs International is an anti-dieting organisation. Their site includes information on International No-Diet day
