Guidelines for sending email to Lucy Serpell's Eating Disorders Resources

I love receiving email about the site! However, I'm currently working in two research jobs and also trying to write up papers from my PhD, so I am somewhat time-limited, to say the least. I hope you will understand that this means I am unable to reply to general enquiries about eating disorders which are not specifically in my area of expertise. Thank you for your understanding

College/University/School Projects

My colleagues and I get many enquiries every week from students doing projects about eating disorders. While I am glad that so many students take an interest in the area, time constraints mean that I will be unable to answer your query personally. However, if you look at some of the information on my website and some of the linked resources, you will almost certainly be able to find the information you are looking for. A good place to start is the books page

Personal enquiries

I also receive many emails from people who are struggling with eating disorders themselves and are looking for support and advice. I find it extremely difficult to ignore these messages and will almost always eventually respond. However, Eating Disorders are complex and demanding problems. Even if I had the time and resources, I would be unable, via email, to provide long term and consistent support of the kind that is needed. However, other people can provide that help and support. For example, your family doctor, school counsellor, close friend or family member are all good people to approach. If you don't feel that you can discuss the problem with someone you know at this stage, there are both eating disorder specific and more general Support Associations (many of whom run phone helplines) available in many countries. I have listed the eating disorder specific associations that I know about in the National Associations section of the site. In addition, people in the UK can contact the Eating Disorders Association helpline on 01603 621414 or the Samaritans on 0345 909090 for support over the phone.

Corrections and broken links

If a link on the site is broken or a resource has moved, please do let me know. I will try to make these sort of changes within a few days.

Suggestions for additions

I am always happy to receive suggestions for additions to the site. If you send me an email suggesting a possible link, I will try to follow up on it within 2 weeks. Once I have had time to look at the site, I will contact you to let you know whether I would like to place a link on my site, or, if I do not think this is appropriate, why not. Once I have decided to link a particular site, it may take me a few more weeks before I have a chance to update the site with the link and a quick description of the site. Once the link is up and running, I'll email you to let you know. Of course, if you are the site owner and would like to reciprocate by linking my site to yours, I would be very grateful.

Suggestions for academic/professional or UK based links or information about relevant courses or conferences are particularly welcome.

Ok, if after ploughing through all this, you still want to email me, go ahead!
